Feature and Follow # 5

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

No, I do not mind. One of the concepts they taught in school was piggy-backing. No idea is original and it is okay to take similar concepts to make them your own. Some times it even leads to better reading material. I love to compare what two different authors ahve done with a similar story. THey may both have the same major concept, but each author is very good about making a story their own.

That being said, it is not okay to take a story, change one or two things about it and call it something new. Nothing is more boring than being able to call what is going to happen in a story because an author went to far with the similarities.

  1. I have been taught the exact same concept all throughout my college experience. No thought/idea is original! Great answer!

  2. Hopping through. Like you, I don't mind piggy-backing as long as the author distinguishes his/her story.

  5. Just hopping through. Definitely agree with your answer! There's inspiration and reinventing or playing around with certain concepts, and then there's copying/stealing stuff. Mhe.

  9. I agree that no thought or idea is original...though in order to be creative you need to mix the old concepts in new ways. :)

  18. I love your answer! That's partly why I love retellings so much because the author is taking an old and widely-used idea and adding their personal spin on it.
Thanks for stopping by my FF--sorry I'm replying back so late!
